The Highlights
In this module, you learned about the technology "know how" and price point options for eCoaching. Technology "know how" needs are relatively simple and straightforward -especially in today's digital world. Price points vary, ranging from high to low cost options. eCoaching through traditional bug-in-ear (BIE) occurs onsite, but advances in online technology now allow the device to be used by an eCoach who is offsite (i.e., located remotely).
In this module, you learned about the research that supports eCoaching through online bug-in-ear technology. First, you explored the definition of and options for carrying out eCoaching. Also, you discovered that bug-in-ear technologies exist for online or onsite (face-to-face) delivery of immediate feedback. Next, you learned how eCoaching through online bug-in-ear technology impacts teachers and P-12 students. Finally, you reviewed teachers' reactions to eCoaching through online bug-in-ear technology. The following list highlights important points covered in this module.
- Bug-in-ear technology has been used effectively to support pre and in-service teacher development in general and special education for over four (4) decades.
- One form of eCoaching allows beginning, mid career, and veteran teachers to receive discreet immediate feedback, during real time classroom instruction, through Bluetooth technology.
- eCoaching through online bug-in-ear technology has been used successfully, not only to increase practicing teachers' use of evidence-based practices, (e.g., high access instruction, effective questioning, positive praise statements, neutral redirection), but also to improve P-12 student engagement.
- Researchers have extended application of eCoaching through bug-in-ear technology to support development and ongoing use of positive behavior supports and interventions, co-teaching practices, and various academic approaches (e.g., KU's Strategic Instruction Model [SIM]).
- Researchers have confirmed repeatedly, across various studies and decades, that the immediate feedback provided through bug-in-ear enabled eCoaching does not disrupt classroom instruction. In fact, most teachers love it!
The questions above will allow you to choose the best technology for your coaching needs. Remember, several state of the art technology options exist, and there is a price point to fit every budget.
