The Highlights
In this module you learned about the fundamentals (i.e., the basics) of coaching. Coaching is an ongoing process that involves two or more professionals joining together to maximize performance. Coaches and coachees form a supportive partnership that facilitates reflection and promotes growth. Both partners should always be mindful of how coaching impacts teaching and learning, in the short term, and student achievement, in the long term.
- There are three variations of coaching: one-on-one, group, and peer observation of best practice.
- Mentoring is typically reserved, although not always, for novice teachers who are learning the ropes.
- Coaching supports the professional growth and development of novice, midcareer, and veteran teachers, based largely on the provision of tailored classroom feedback.
- Coaching involves setting, monitoring, and evaluating specific, individualized performance goals, centered on teaching and learning.
- Some examples of coaching models include cognitive coaching, instructional coaching, and literacy coaching.
- Effective coaches partner with teachers in positive ways. They share their wisdom respectfully and compassionately. They support teaching and learning to maximize teacher and student performance.
Remember, the goal of feedback is to provide teachers with the support they need to positively impact student performance!
