After the monthly principals' meeting, Mr. Ford returns to Star Middle School, where he is the principal. He discusses the outcomes of the meeting with the members of his leadership team, particularly the need to form a school-based coaching development team. He explains the team's mission, which includes exploring methods of effective coaching, identifying coaching resources available within and outside the district, and developing expertise to share with colleagues. Realizing the shortcomings of traditional approaches to professional development, the team members eagerly begin their work. They start by researching coaching models as well as the various components associated with effective coaching.
The goal of this module is to gain an understanding of the principles and practices that support effective coaching. We refer to these as "coaching basics".
